How to Tell Real Leather From Fake: A Complete Buyer's Guide

by RXD Leather 09 Jul 2026

Buying a leather jacket, wallet, or bag is an investment — and nobody wants to pay a premium price for a plastic imitation. The trouble is that modern faux leather (PU, PVC, and “vegan” leather) has become very good at looking like the real thing. So how do you tell real leather from fake before you spend your money?

At RXD Leather, every jacket and accessory is crafted from genuine hides, so we know exactly what to look for. In this guide, we’ll walk you through eight simple tests you can do in seconds — whether you’re shopping online or holding the product in your hands.

1. 👃 The Smell Test

Genuine leather has a rich, earthy, slightly musky smell that’s almost impossible to fake. Real hides carry the natural scent of the tanning process. Synthetic leather, on the other hand, smells like plastic or chemicals — a sharp, artificial odor. If it smells like a new shower curtain, it’s not real leather.

2. ✋ The Touch & Texture Test

Run your fingers across the surface. Real leather feels warm, soft, and slightly uneven — because it comes from an animal, no two sections are identical. It also creases and wrinkles naturally when you press it, much like skin. Fake leather feels cold, overly smooth, and uniformly “perfect,” and it springs back without natural folds.

You can feel this difference instantly in a piece like our Men’s Black Genuine Leather Motorcycle Jacket — supple, warm, and full of natural character.

3. 🔍 Look at the Grain and Pores

This is one of the most reliable tests. Genuine leather has an irregular pore pattern — the tiny imperfections, scars, and natural markings are all unique. Synthetic leather is printed with a repeating, machine-perfect texture. If you look closely (or zoom into a product photo) and the grain pattern repeats identically, you’re looking at a fake.

4. ✂️ Check the Edges

The edges reveal a lot. Real leather has rough, fibrous edges because it’s a natural material. Faux leather has clean, foam-backed, or plastic-like edges that look sealed and perfectly even. Peek at seams and cut lines whenever you can — on a genuine piece like our Vintage Leather Laptop Messenger Bag, the burnished edges are a giveaway of the real thing.

5. 💧 The Water Absorption Test

Place a small drop of water on the surface. Genuine leather will slowly absorb a little moisture and darken slightly, because it’s porous. Fake leather repels water completely — the droplet just sits on top. (Do this gently and only where a small mark won’t matter.)

6. ↩️ The Bend Test

Gently bend the material. Real leather changes color slightly and wrinkles naturally as it flexes, showing off its living-material character. Synthetic leather keeps the same color and stiffness no matter how you bend it.

7. 🏷️ Read the Label

Honest brands are proud to say “genuine leather,” “full-grain,” or “top-grain.” Be cautious of vague terms like “man-made material,” “PU leather,” “bonded leather,” or simply “leatherette” — these are all synthetic or heavily processed. If a label avoids the word “genuine” entirely, ask why.

8. 💰 Consider the Price

Real leather takes skill, time, and quality hides to produce. If a “leather” jacket is priced suspiciously low, it’s almost certainly synthetic. Genuine leather costs more upfront — but it lasts for years and ages beautifully, which is exactly why it’s worth it.

📊 Know Your Grades: The Types of Genuine Leather

Not all real leather is equal. Here’s a quick breakdown from best to lowest quality:

  • Full-grain leather — the top layer of the hide with all its natural grain intact. The most durable and premium option, and it develops a gorgeous patina over time.
  • Top-grain leather — sanded and finished for a smoother, more uniform look. Slightly more affordable while still high quality. Our Men’s Brown Lambskin Leather Blazer is a great example.
  • Genuine leather — made from the lower layers of the hide. Real, but less durable than the two grades above.
  • Bonded leather — scraps of leather glued together with a synthetic binder. Technically contains leather, but behaves more like faux leather. Avoid it for long-lasting products.

Final Word

You don’t need to be an expert to spot fake leather — just trust your senses. Smell it, feel it, look closely at the grain, and read the label. When in doubt, buy from a brand that’s upfront about its materials.
